Let’s take it back to the good old days with this LAUSD Coffee Cake–a true Los Angeles school favorite!
If you grew up in an LA city school, you probably remember this iconic coffee cake. It was the highlight of breakfast, with its perfectly crumbly, cinnamon-sweet topping and soft, buttery cake. Just one bite takes you right back to those cafeteria mornings.
The best part? It’s incredibly easy to make at home, so you can relive those nostalgic flavors whenever you want!

LAUSD COFFEE CAKE RECIPE
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- ½ cup + 1 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 3/4 cup melted butter (original recipe calls for oil, but I prefer butter for richer flavor and health benefits)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 egg
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x13-inch cake pan.
2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, brown sugar, sugar, salt, and nutmeg until combined. Stir in the melted butter until the mixture becomes crumbly. Set aside ½ cup of this mixture and mix it with the cinnamon–this will be your crumble topping.
3. To the remaining mixture, add the baking soda, baking powder, egg, and buttermilk. Stir until just combined–don’t overmix.
4. Pour the batter into the greased cake pan and sprinkle the cinnamon crumble topping evenly over the batter.
5. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool slightly before serving.
