Homemaking Weekly Cleaning Schedule

As a busy mother, wife, and homemaker it is very important that I organize my time and days with a weekly cleaning schedule in order to keep things organized and clean!

Recently I noticed that even after keeping the home consistently clean all week, there was one day where things got a little crazy with an unexpected outing and I slacked off a little, things became messy real fast! Making the house look like I hadn’t cleaned up all week which I definitely had been doing. This showed me however that it is so much easier to upkeep the home than to be overwhelmed and stressed with a huge mess.

Schedules are not always going to be perfect or stay as planned, but it’s essential to have one even if it’s loosely made. It is also important to remember to go with the flow from day to day and through each season of life to prevent overwhelm and frustration.

However, it is certainly true that creating routines and schedules is key to keeping things organized and calm. Creating daily habits like making the bed and closing the kitchen every night for example are two things that if I didn’t do, it would make a huge difference in my days and my productivity.

But, one thing I hadn’t really established is when to do my deep cleaning. So I decided to make a schedule where every day of the week I focus on certain areas of my home.

Another way to approach it is to theme days out by task, like floor day, laundry day, dusting day, etc. However for me scheduling my cleaning tasks by certain areas of the home is what is currently working better for me.

So, you can test out your own cleaning schedule and see what works for you, if it’s not working change it. I had to switch things around a few times when I first started testing out my deep cleaning schedule.

In other words, I understand cleaning schedules can be overwhelming but the point of them is to make our life easier, so if it's stressing you then figure out how you can adjust it.

How To create a cleaning schedule:

Start off by making a list of all the areas in your home that need focusing and deep cleaning. What I mean by deep cleaning is when you take the time to dust out the room, wipe everything down, get behind corners that collect trash, declutter, and basically just clean deeper than the daily maintenance that usually gets done.

Here is the list I made of all the areas in my home that need deep cleaning:

Kitchen

Dining room

Laundry area

Living room

Bathrooms

Bedrooms

Hallways

Entry way

Staircase

After writing down all the areas of your home that need attention, you can then add them to your weekly schedule.

Here is what I came up with:

My Homemaking weekly cleaning schedule

Mondays: Kitchen, Dining Room, Laundry area

Tuesday: Living Room, Entryway

Wednesday: Bathrooms

Thursday: Bedrooms

Friday: Hallways, Staircase, Catch all

Saturday: Outdoor tidy up if necessary

Sunday: Grocery, Planning, Rest Day

*Everyday I do one load of laundry*

On Mondays I make sure to wipe down all the counters, baseboards, windows, table, appliances, and cabinets in the kitchen and dining area. My small laundry room is in my kitchen (I know, weird), so I wipe that down along with the kitchen area. I also sweep and mop the floors. Most of the time I decide to mop floors all through the downstairs area so that I don’t have to do it in sections daily. But sometimes I mop as needed if my floors seem like they could use a mopping, at any day of the week.

Tuesday’s I wipe and dust all the furniture, baseboards, windows, fireplace, vacuum the rug, and tidy up things that have gathered. I wipe down the tv and wash pillow covers if needed. I clear clutter especially in the entry way and pick up dog toys, kids toys, and mail.

Wednesday I focus on bathrooms and I clean the toilet, shower, tub, sink, counters, mirrors, take out trash, and clean floors. I also wash our bath towels, hand towels, and bath mats. We usually have enough clean towels to last us throughout the week. I declutter, take out trash, and mop/sweep.

Thursdays I focus on bedrooms and I wash all the linens and bed sheets. Tidy up rooms, dust, wipe down night stands and dressers, and vacuum the carpets.

Fridays I vacuum stairway, hallways, and I tidy up the linen closet. It is also a catch all day which means I get any cleaning tasks done that I missed earlier in the week.

Saturday's we do any outdoor work (mostly my husband), when necessary.

Sunday's I do grocery pick up or delivery, deep clean refrigerator if necessary, I tidy up the pantry and sweep away crumbs or onion peels etc, do any planning, and relax.

I also do meal planning over the weekend usually on Sundays but sometimes on Saturdays.

How to get it done

I recommend setting a timer for 15-30 minutes especially if you are on a time crunch. Do whatever you can do within that time frame or during your child’s nap time.

Remember don’t let the schedule rule you. You’re fitting a schedule into your life to go with the flow and work for you.

Everyone’s home layout and daily routine is different so I suggest you test out what works best for your home and life. Remember you don’t need to force yourself to stick to a schedule that just isn’t working. Test it out and make adjustments.
