The 5 Gift Christmas Rule
If you are not sure what to buy your kids for Christmas this year or you feel like they already have too many toys then let me introduce to you the 5 gift Christmas rule (if you have not already heard of it)!
The 5 Gift Christmas rule is perfect if your house is cluttered with toys, you're on a budget, and/or if you are not sure what to gift your kids this year!
The 5 gift Christmas rule can also be the 4 gift Christmas rule or even the 5 gift Christmas rule depending on what works best for you and your family.
I first planned on sticking to the
4 Gift Christmas rule
SOMETHING I WANT
SOMETHING I NEED
SOMETHING TO WEAR
SOMETHING TO READ
But then I also heard of the
5 Gift Christmas Rule
SOMETHING I WANT
SOMETHING I NEED
SOMETHING TO WEAR
SOMETHING TO READ
SOMETHING TO SHARE
And then ultimately went with the
6 Gift Christmas Rule
SOMETHING I WANT
SOMETHING I NEED
SOMETHING TO WEAR
SOMETHING TO READ
SOMETHING TO SHARE
SOMETHING TO DO
So basically you can decide which one to do!
I share my 4-6 Gift Christmas rule printable below!
Here are some examples of what can go in each category of your child's wishlist.
Something I want
This is where their favorite toy or item goes in.
Think something like Barbies, toys cars, slime kits, Lego's, Electronics, etc.
There can and maybe should be a budget attached to this (and maybe all categories).
Something I need
Something they need could be like a backpack, winter boots, underwear, a bigger sized bike, new bed sheets, bedroom organizers or bedroom furniture like a nightstand.
Something to wear
Some examples are winter jackets, dresses, new jeans, slippers, pair of shoes, or a nice piece of jewelry.
Something to read
I really like this category. They can pick a certain genre of books like fantasy, princess, and science books. Or comic books, chapter books, early reader books. A bookstore gift card is also a great option.
I am planning to add in this small reading light for reading before bed.
SOMETHING TO SHARE
This one can be something for all the children or family to share.
Cotton candy maker, popcorn maker, backyard trampoline, board games, are some cool examples.
SOMETHING TO DO
This one is about experiences!
Museums, zoo, indoor trampoline, amusement park, ball game, petting zoo, movie theater, and pottery painting will make awesome experiences!
TIPS
If you think any of the above options will be too expensive then remember you can give them a budget or you can narrow down the options and give them whichever options to choose from that you approve.
If you have other family members interested in their 5 Gift (or 4 or 6) Christmas rule wish list then you can have your child add a second or third option to each category and put it in order starting with most wanted. That is what we did. It makes it easier for other family members who are not sure what to gift your kids get some ideas.
