Hey guys!
So in today’s blog post I will share our authentic horchata recipe that we made at home recently!
We needed an horchata fix because we miss mexican food from back at home in Los Angeles.
This was only the second time making horchata and the first time we used a more plain recipe that didn’t seem to have that strong horchata flavor.
You can catch a glimpse of Jane and I making horchata on our vlog. If you want to skip forward it begins at around 7:30.
However the recipe I share below is very tasty and delicious!
All you need is:
- Rice
- 1 Cinnamon Stick
- Almonds
- Evaporated Milk
- Regular Milk
- Water
- Sugar
- Vanilla extract (optional)
- Ground Cinnamon to taste
- Ice
Here we go!
Soak
First we need to soak our rice, cinnamon stick, and almonds. You can do it overnight or in the morning and have it soak for at least 5 hours.
Soaking these ingredients will make them softer and easier to mix together which helps have a smoother and tastier drink.
There are also health benefits to soaking foods like rice (legumes) and almonds (nuts). It removes the natural protective barrier called phytic acid. It is beneficial to remove phytic acid because it prevents natural mineral absorption like calcium and magnesium.
You can also check out my beans recipe where I also soak overnight before cooking.
Strain Out
Next, you strain out the ingredients and give them a quick rinse.
Blend Together
Next blend together the almonds, rice, and cinnamon stick with a can of evaporated milk and regular milk. Blend untill smooth.
Strain Out Horchata Mix
Strain out and pour the liquid into a pitcher or jug.
Add remaining ingredients
Lastly add sugar, vanilla extract, and water. Stir together. Give it a taste test and add more water, sugar, or cinnamon to your desire.
Add ice and enjoy!
*Note: You can sprinkle a bit of cinnamon over each individual cup if preferred.
I hope this recipe is helpful.
